> Shadowing a Home Energy Analyst

Jonathan Hiskes shadowed Paul Holt, our Home Energy Analyst, for a day and wrote about his experience in "9 Things I Learned by Shadowing a Home-Energy Inspector" for Grist about his experience. To read the article, please click here.

What will an energy audit do for me?

An energy audit helps the homeowner with home energy efficiency and comfort issues. It will help identify opportunities to lower utility costs through various measures, like air sealing, insulation, education on energy usage habits and other proven methods. Below is what you can expect from an ecoFAB analyst during an energy audit:

  • examines the exterior of the house
  • conducts a blower door test to determine the amount of air leakage
  • identifies insulation levels and air leaks with thermal imaging equipment
  • examines the condition and efficiency of the appliances, furnace, ductwork, and heating system
  • evaluates the hot water system and pipe wrap.
  • checks insulation levels in the basement or crawlspace, walls, and attic
  • checks combustion safety for gas, oil, and wood burning appliances
  • evaluates the efficiency of doors and windows
  • discusses and evaluates energy usage in home and educates homeowner on how habits play a part in the overall home efficiency

Within a few days of the audit, the homeowner will receive a report discussing the results and suggestions for improvement. This includes a list of recommendations, including simple, low-cost actions you can take to start saving right away and perhaps larger home improvements that will do even more to improve comfort and reduce home energy costs.

What is a ductless heat pump system?

A ductless heat pump is a highly efficient heating and cooling system. Ductless heat pumps use 25 to 50 percent less energy to heat your home. Systems come standard with air conditioning so you can get rid of those window units.

Benefits of a Ductless Heat Pump:

  • Saves energy and reduces monthly expenses
  • Low cost installation
  • Extremely comfortable and quiet
  • Circulates heat evenly throughout the space
  • Built in air conditioner
  • No ductwork needed

To find out more information on how you may benefit from a ductless heat system, please go to: www.goingductless.com.

Rebate information for Ductless Heat Pumps:

SCL Rebate: If you're currently heating your home with electric resistance baseboards or wall heaters, Seattle City Light can help you upgrade to a Ductless Heating and Cooling System with a $1,200 rebate.

PSE Rebate: Get an $800 rebate from PSE to go ductless with a qualifying heat pump system.
