EcoFAB is delighted to be providing home energy retrofits with SustainableWorks in the Wedgewood neighborhood. SustainableWorks is a community-based non-profit organization created to help home and small commercial building owners with retrofits to reduce energy usage while also creating green jobs. SustainableWorks started one of the largest energy efficiency retrofit programs in the country and chose Puget Sound neighborhoods to launch their pilot programs.
EcoFAB began retrofitting homes in the Wedgewood neighborhood in late summer of 2010 and expects to continue the retrofits there throughout the fall season. SustainableWorks has already started providing energy audits to home owners in Federal Way and will begin energy retrofits there this winter. For more information on SustainableWorks please visit SustainableWorks website.
When you hear someone mention air pollution you usually think of the air outside, but have you considered the air in your home? The EPA found indoor air pollution 5 times higher than pollution in outdoor air and, according to the American Lung Association, adults are now indoors 90% of the time. Do these figures alarm you or make you wonder what your indoor air quality is like? Want to find out for sure? Then sign up for EcoFAB's raffle for a free indoor air quality test.
What's involved in an indoor air quality test?
The test will evaluate the following:
- Health — particle allergens, chemical pollutants, and carbon dioxide.
- Comfort — temperature and relative humidity.
- Safety — carbon monoxide and radon.
Once the test is complete ecoFAB will provide you with a report of your air quality results and recommendations.
How do you enter the raffle?
It is easy: to be entered into the raffle please send an email, noting Indoor Air Quality Raffle in the subject line to info@ecofab.net. Please be sure to provide your name, phone number, and your preferred method of contact in the body of the email. The raffle will be held on October 6th and the winner will be notified within 24 hours.
Four FAB tips for improving your indoor air quality:
- Keep Toxins out — Use non-toxic cleaning products. Many are available at your local store or make your own from common household staples. Earth Easy has great non-toxic cleaning tips Earth Easy website. If you must use toxic cleaning products, keep them in the garage or shed and not in your living space.
- Let Fresh Air in — Open windows to let fresh air into your house instead of using air fresheners. This will help circulate the air in your home. At this time of year, opening your windows is not always an option so another option is to run your utility room and bathroom fans to help circulate the air in your home. Run your fans while you are showering or doing laundry and for 15-20 minutes afterwards.
- Change your air filter — Changing your furnace air filter at least twice a year will help remove contaminants from your home.
- Keep smoke out — Don't smoke in your home. Also, limit the burning wood in your home because it can impact indoor air and increase outdoor air pollution.
We are happy to introduce our Community Outreach Specialist, Sheila White. Sheila is only a two year veteran of the green movement but certainly has made a huge impact in the Seattle market. Sheila entered the weatherization/retrofit business to help out of work union members and individuals of diverse backgrounds, who might otherwise not be able to find employment, become employable.
Sheila sits on the Advisory Board of Seattle's Vocational Institutes PACT Program and will be the Key Note Speaker this year at their 10th Annual Dinner in October. She has an undergraduate degree in Music, a MSW, and a MBA. Sheila feels none of her degrees prepared her for the love she has for what she does now. This is her true calling. Other than her four grown children and 3 grandchildren, this is her passion.
