> Partnership with Sustainable Edmonds

EcoFAB is excited to announce our partnership with Sustainable Edmonds in their Save Energy Now (SEN) program. SEN is aimed at helping local home and business owners find ways to reduce their annual utility consumption by at least 10 percent in 2010. The City of Edmonds provided funding for the pilot program, with the hope of creating an energy conservation model for home and business owners citywide. EcoFAB is performing energy audits for participating homes and businesses, and conservation progress will be monitored using the CarbonSalon.net website. Business and Home Owners with Sustainable Edmonds will share lessons learned. For more information, visit the Sustainable Edmonds website.

> Why Are Heat Pumps Efficient?

Winter is here, and although it may feel a little more like spring, our heaters are running to keep us warm. Because of the temperate climate in the Northwest, it is a prime location to use heat pumps. Heat pumps can be used for both heating and cooling, and are much more efficient than electric heaters. Here are some reasons to consider a heat pump for your thermal comfort needs:

  • Efficiency: Because heat pumps move heat rather than generate heat, they can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume. For example: a heat pump that can produce 3 kW of heat per every 1 kW of electricity used is operating at 300% efficiency! Compare this to regular electric heaters, which give you a maximum of 1kW for every 1 kW used.

  • Year-round use: Heat pumps can be used in the Puget Sound region almost year-round. When the temperature drops below freezing heat pumps have a hard time getting sufficient heat out of cold winter air to heat your home. On those few days you may have to use a supplemental heat source, often included with many heat pumps, to heat your home. But, with that said, our average temperature is the sweet spot for the heat pump to be extremely efficient and effective way to heat your home.

  • Better comfort in the house: Heat produced by heat pumps is less intense than heat from the furnace. It makes the heating cycle longer and heat distribution more even.

  • Safe to use: Since heat pumps use electricity, not fuel, there is no reason to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning or fuel (gas, propane, oil) escape inside of the house.
